PRODUCTION LOGO

After several research and considerations on the Internet, we decided to name our production company as ‘Reneé’. We used a French word as we feel that it brings a sense of mystery as well as feminine. Renée is a feminine name of French origin that means "born again," making it an excellent option for the little one who is full of life. Through the meaning of born again, our company will be the representation of rebirth as the product being released will bring a new coat.

Moving to the next stage, we investigated a variety of different logo designs to decide on the final decision. We used  Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and famous production company such as Universal Music Group to search for some inspiration as we just can access free websites. These are those sketches that we tried as well as the final product:

Final Production Company Logo

After several considerations, we decided to choose this logo to be the official production company logo as it perfectly fits our overall theme and color scheme throughout the three products.  I made this logo from Adobe Illustrator because this app includes professional tools that specialize in designing such kinds of logos. The bubble style of this logo also makes me resonates with the image of feminity, meaning that it can represent our intention by just looking at the logo.

Initial Overview

In this advanced portfolio coursework, I’m going to undertake the production of a music video of an already released song. Pop and R&B songs are those common types of music that often interest and catch my emotions, meaning that the chosen song in the future would be between those two. Furthermore, to fully explore and demonstrate my ability, I would prefer a song that has no official music video so that I can freely play around with my ideas without any external influences. As a female figure, I believe that I would choose a song that can illustrate an idea related to feminine and transmit a meaningful message to the audience. Moreover, the rhythm and beat of the song are also crucial as it can determine the level of space and field that I have to attempt new camera movements or editing techniques.

Ariana Grande - 7 rings

‘7 rings’ music video of Ariana Grande has the main colour scheme of neon pink to show the naughtiness as well as sexiness of the girl. This colour tone also raises a sense of mystery as it is mixed with dark colour like black.

I’m inspired by this colour tone because I feel that it can fully express the hidden seduction within the lyrics of my chosen song - Moonlight. Previously, I’m also intended to build a dark colour scheme for my music video to imply the girl’s mystery

Stephen Sanchez - Be More

This is one of my inspirations for the lip syncing part of the main singer. Since we have to include various performance-based scenes, I planned to do the lip syncing part like how Stephen Sanchez did in his music video to catch the audience’s attention. I feel like by just standing there and singing, the singer themselves can radiate a mysterious charm to viewers through the small screen.

Dua Lipa - Levitating

Screenshot 2023-12-04 at 21.40.22.png

The smoke is just a small element that I want to add into the production of my music video as it can contribute to the mystery that I’m building for the singer. The smoke can be seen as a visual effect that helps to build the singer’s image.

Ava Max - Sweet but Psycho

The dining scene from ‘Sweet but Psycho’ is an interesting and inspiring part for me. This scene raises a feeling of mystery and seduction where the girl seems obsessed and having a passionate feeling for the man. If it’s possible, I may wish to reproduce this section as it relates to the theme that I’m wanting - love and women. We would always see a mischievous and monstrous nature in a woman instead of being submissive and loyal to their partner.

Madison Beer - Hurts Like Hell

The first scene in the music video of ‘Hurts Like Hell’ by Madison Beer is an appealing scene for me as the props and objects are very unique and bizarre. This scene shows the effort of production teams in building ideas to make the music video more outstanding compared to the others. I may wish to reproduce this part as this is appealing for my production because of the mystery that it expressed out to the audience. This scene can be used as one of the first scenes in my music video to catch the attention since the idea is extraordinary.

JENNIE - ‘You & Me’ Dance Performance

Even though this is not a music video, it contained the idea that is attractive and alluring for me. I like the idea of dancing under the shadow where the lighting is off and the audience just can see the shadow of the characters. This idea when coupled with the background of a moon illustrates a timeless, burning expression of desire and heartbreak. With my production, I’m also intended to add in a dance performance therefore this can be one of the potential ideas that may be utilised in the music video production.

Social  Media

Inspirations

IMG_8461 2.jpg

I like the way Blackpink arranges its instagram account in certain themes such as how they celebrate Jisoo’s birthday through a horizontal sequence of posts with the colour scheme of blue. With our instagram account, we would create such kinds of posts for the release poster of the music video to highlight its importance as well as keep it in the simplest but most effective layout.

IMG_8463 2.jpg

With the instagram account of Twice, they include a link to the group’s newest song in the biography and highlights underneath. This would increase the access of mass audiences to the group’s information which can further widen their popularity in the world. We also like to include those features in our social media in order to boost the engagement between producers and audience.

IMG_8527.jpg

By looking at the instagram account of The Weeknd and One Direction, we notice that uploading different reels can also increase the views of the audience. This type of content would reduce the gap between the artist and their audience by posting footage from their daily life or behind-the-scenes. In our social media account, we would also include this content as it can show our production to the audience’s eyes.

Digipak Inspirations

picmonkey-collage1 (2).jpg

When looking at Ariana Grande - “My Everything” digipak, we can see that the design and layout is relatively simple but it is still eye-catching and attractive to the audience like us. It follows the main colour scheme of purple and black, which may link to the music video or album itself. Furthermore, the CD is covered with a photo from the music video which creates a cohesive sequence and branding guidelines of her products. For our future digipak, I would like to include a photo from the music

Digipak by Selena Gomez is also very visually appealing with the image of herself as well as the minor band group. Similar to Ariana Grande, this of Selena also follows the main colour scheme of pink and purple, which brings a sense of fantasy to the viewers. By just looking at the digipak, we as the audience can guess the melody and rhythm of the song as slow and steady. This is the feature that I like about this digipak where it transmits to the audience an emotional message about the album or music video. I also want to bring this into my digipak so that the audience can feel the emotion within my chosen song.

Song Choice

Moonlight1.webp

“Moonlight” by Kali Uchis is the song that my partner and I chose to produce. When hearing this song, we were being appealed by the unique rhythm and melody as a slow-paced R&B song. Furthermore, as both of us are female, a feminine-related song like “Moonlight” raises a sense of connection. Even though the beat of “Moonlight” is steady and not too fast, it can still create an alluring attraction. The voice tone of Kali Uchis when coupled with the lyrics gives a feeling of sexiness and seduction that may evoke an emotional and spiritual ascent of the audience. Looking deep into the underlying meaning, we were amazed as it embraces the idea of liberation and freedom where the woman is trying to break free from constraints. This meaning illustrates through “Think I may go out tonight/I just wanna ride, get high in the moonlight”. The title “Moonlight” literally means the behind shadow of each individual which links to the complexities of identity and self-reflection.

I just wanna get high with my lover

Veo una muñeca cuando miro en el espejo

Kiss, kiss

Looking dolly, I think I may go out tonight

I just wanna ride, get high in the moonlight

I just wanna get high with my lover

Veo una muñeca cuando miro en el espejo

Kiss, kiss

Looking dolly, I think I may go out tonight

I just wanna ride, get high in the moonlight

Forget the small talk

The surface level ain't much that I care for

Putting on my lipgloss

I saw you stare from my peripheral

Yeah, baby, it's been a hell of a day

But I know a place we can escape

Find out how it feels to let go of everything

Be free

When you're here with me

I just wanna get high with my lover

Veo una muñeca cuando miro en el espejo

Kiss, kiss

Looking dolly, I think I may go out tonight

I just wanna ride, get high in the moonlight

I just wanna get high with my lover

Veo una muñeca cuando miro en el espejo

Kiss, kiss

Looking dolly, I think I may go out tonight

I just wanna ride, get high in the moonlight

There's nothing like peace of mind

And you take the time to make sure that I'm okay

I know I can put stress on your brain

You still love me, put no one above me

You always go out of your way

To show me that I'm your priority

Find out how it feels to let go of everything

Be free

When you're here with me

I just wanna get high with my lover

Veo una muñeca cuando miro en el espejo (I just wanna get high with my lover)

Kiss, kiss

Looking dolly, I think I may go out tonight

I just wanna ride, get high in the moonlight

I just wanna get high with my lover (get high)

Veo una muñeca cuando miro en el espejo (high with my lover)

Kiss, kiss

Looking dolly, I think I may go out tonight

I just wanna ride, get high in the moonlight

Get high with you

Get higher and higher with you

Let's go to the moon

And leave behind all that

How does it feel, here by my side getting higher and higher?

Under the moonlight's glow

There's nowhere we won't go

Together go higher and higher

(No-no-nowhere we won't go)

Artist Mise-en-scene

Artist Mise-en-scene

Costumes

The majority of costumes that we chose for the main character are relatively eye-catching and attractive which can maximise her confidence and sexiness within the music video. As our theme/ message is related to social pressure on being pretty, we want to build an extremely appealing look for her to illustrate the importance of beauty in the society. Besides that, this kind of sparkly costumes also link to a sense of sexiness that the song’s lyrics convey.

Props & Accessories

The props being included in the powerpoint seems to be lacking but these are actually what we planned to use in our music video up until this moment. Prop such as a bathtub is not certain as we don’t know if we can rent or borrow to bring it to the studio or not. These are the major props that we will use to differentiate between different scenes, however the list may be longer in the future as we develop our idea further.

Makeup/ Hair

With makeup and hair, we want to choose a layout makeup where it can fully show off the beautiful angles on the main character. Each of the makeup layouts that I choose follows a different style such as western style or cute style, illustrating that as our music video contains various kinds of scenes, every setting will use a different makeup layout to outline their differences. In terms of hair, we don’t add an excess number of accessories on the character’s hair as it may be unnecessary. The chosen hairstyles lie between being simple and complicated but it is still appealing and charming for the visual of the character.

Body language/ Movement

The body language of the character in our music video will mostly look bored and passive to indicate the sense of desperation and boredom within herself as always attempting to adapt to the social beauty pressure. However, in the choreography scenes, her body will be more active and flexible as the energy being restrained within the body is now being released.

Setting Background

These are some examples of setting background that we may use in our music video. In those backgrounds, there are not a lot of complicated props therefore we would not need to rent or buy a large number of props to prepare. However, as the majority of these scenes would be filmed in a studio, the studio that we intend to rent needs to have a white background where the colour led lighting can reflect on there. If possible, we also want to find a studio where they can offer the renting of the required lighting equipment that we need such as colour led lighting and normal lighting. In addition, the size of the studio would not need to be very large as mostly we just film the medium shots and the shots just contain the main character, therefore a large space is unnecessary.

Alley

Alley is the only outside setting that we chose, even though in the initial planning, we intended to film all of our scenes in a studio. As we intend to film a lip-syncing shot here where there is just the main character, a small and empty space is required to bring a sense of being constrained and locked. The alley should be small and a little bit old.  Not only that our filming time would be in the evening therefore we have to be really quick before the sky gets too dark.
